Success Criteria

Step 8: Success Criteria

Clear criteria anchor the project in measurable outcomes. Defining each criterion's description, metric/KPI, baseline value, target value, measurement method, data source, responsible owner, and timeframe allows for objective assessment of success and supports reporting to stakeholders. It ensures that everyone agrees on the finish line before the race begins.

Defining Project Success

Success isn't just about launching; it's about achieving the intended outcome. Clear criteria make success an objective assessment, not a subjective debate after the fact.

Criterion Description

A brief, clear statement of what success looks like for a particular aspect of the project. This goes beyond the high-level KPIs to define specific, verifiable goals for completion and adoption. Examples include "Launch Readiness," "User Adoption," or "Stakeholder Satisfaction."

Metric/KPI & Baseline/Target Values

For each criterion, define the specific metric that will be used for measurement, its starting value (baseline), and the target value that must be reached. This makes the criterion quantifiable. For "User Adoption," the metric might be "Monthly Active Users," with a baseline of "0" and a target of "10,000."

Measurement Method & Data Source

How and where will you get the data to track the metric? This is a crucial, often-missed step that ensures you can actually measure what you've defined. For "Monthly Active Users," the data source might be "Google Analytics," and the method would be "Filtering for users with at least one session in a calendar month."

Responsible Owner & Timeframe

Assign a person who is accountable for tracking and reporting on the criterion, and define the timeframe by which the target should be met (e.g., "within 3 months of launch"). This creates clear accountability and a schedule for evaluation, ensuring that success is actively monitored post-launch.

Key Artifacts

This module produces documents that provide an objective, data-driven view of project performance against its stated goals.

  • Project Scorecard: A high-level summary that tracks the overall health of the project against its most critical success criteria, often using a red/yellow/green status for quick assessment.
  • Metrics Dashboard: A detailed view of each KPI, showing baseline vs. target values over time. This artifact is essential for ongoing monitoring and reporting to stakeholders.
